 Jessen was among the first officers in the Wiking's tank battalion in 1942 and went on to receive the German Cross in Gold on 15 December 1943 for leading a Sturmgeschütz battery during the retreat over the Dneiper. Previously, he had received the Panzer Assault Badge.
