After their final suicidal attack on the Americans seeking to recapture Attu fails, Japanese dead, mostly at their own hands, carpet the Tundra. The Soldier in the fore-ground is one of many who turned themselves into human bombs, clutching a grenade to his chest as he hurled himself on the attackers. 'thats what the caption in the book says. After numerous corrections pointed out to me in earlier posts, I leave it too the viewers to decide the veracity of comment. (scanned by HOS Bandit)

Banzai Aftermath

Paratroopers arrive at the spot where other members of their 101st Airborne Division unit were cut down by German snipers. This photo was taken near Carentan, south of Utah Beach on June 14, 1944. The trooper in the foreground was apparently killed by a single bullet that penetrated his helmet. (scanned by HOS Bandit)
