Two Spitfires Mk IX of 241 Squadron RAF on patrol over the Vesuvius area, Italy, 27 January 1944. Converted from Hurricane to Spitfire IX on December 1943, the 241 Squadron was transferred from North Africa to Southern Italy for a wide range of duties, including tactical and maritime reconnaissance, bomber escort and ground attack. The Squadron was equipped with Spitfires until 14 August 1945 when, still in Italy, was disbanded. Victor Sierra
