Precarious exit ...

David Low/Evening Standard newspaper.

David Low's view of the prospects for Axis forces' evacuation from North Africa following their 1943 defeat. The German military, as a high-wire performer, and with the "Afrika Corps" riding on its shoulders, contemplates evacuation to Sicily across a tightrope beset by explosions. Not for the first time, Low was perceptive. Vigorous efforts were made to evacuate Axis troops from Tunisia by sea and by air. However, limited air and shipping resources, combined with the ability of the Allies to interdict the evacuation (notably, from undefeated Malta) meant that most of the Axis troops fell prisoner of war, and that no significant amount of heavy equipment was evacuated. Best regards, JR.
