Generaloberst (Colonel General) EDUARD DIETL (1890-1944). The "Hero of Narvik" on a painting of Josef Hengge, 1941. On June 23rd, 1944 the plane that should bring Dietl back to his Army Group in Lapland crashed on the 1800 meter "Hochwechsel" mountain in the Austrian Alps. He had been on the Obersalzberg to a meeting woth Adolf Hitler. His death was initially kept secret due to political reasons.
