"Verdunkeln! Der Feind sieht dein Licht!" - Blackout! The enemy sees your light! To blackout was considered to be the most effective way to abstract important targets from the sight of enemy bombers. At this no ray of light must percolate from inside of buildings. Vehicle- and streetlighting had to be deadened to a minimum. Pre-stage to this was "limited illumination" meaning only bright flare and dispensable lighting had to be avoided.
