U.S. Marines wounded by Japanese fire on the beaches of Iwo Jima are evacuated on pontoon barges by U.S. Navy Hospital Corpsmen, to be taken on Landing Ship, Tank (LST), then transferred to hospital ships, during the first day of the Battle of Iwo Jima (Operation Detachment). The aim of the American invasion was the capture of the entire island including the three Japanese-controlled airfields, to provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands;  Iwo Jima, 19 February 1945.
