it looks like Willie Pete ( white phosphorus ) but it would be used better as an incendiary use than HE, in the 80's we carried WP rounds in our tanks for that use, against buildings, bunkers, etc.

That is a phosphorus explosion. This picture was posed, i heard, and believe. With Hitler at the bottom, and the soldiers are hanging out in the middle of the street.

that's a non-fragmentary controlled explosion - probably clearing a path obstruction. They soldiers are taking half cover and aren't concerned with fragmentation. Check out the creepy black and white photo of the man in the suit in the foreground.

To be fair I think it is a controlled explosion. Not a bomb. Note the 10 cap hand crank detonator in the center of the road infront of the guy crouching. Plus you can just make out Det cord or cable running down the road. Plus it would be one hell of a ...

Plus you can just make out Det cord or cable running down the road. Plus it would be one hell of a well timed photo to catch a unpredictable bomb. To top it the guys don't look to bothered.
