Aleksander Solshenitzyn who was in close contact with many national groups during his time spent on Gulag Archipelago, was writing in his ‘Gulag Archipelago’ book, with the highest respect to the West Ukrainian ex-UPA fighters, and to most of the Balts. Lithuanians were for some not clearly explained reason excepted from his ‘good guys’ list.
Ukrainian villagers, when asked about UPA, tell about them as about those who were ‘repossessing’ their pigs. The best I could hear from West Ukrainians about UPA was that ‘they were good and bad’.
