World War 2 Photos > Rating Album: 3.5 > Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe

Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe

Sturmbannführer Helmut Kämpfe

Description

Another example of someone adopting a slightly unnatural pose to display his cuff title - in this case, that of the "Der Führer" regiment of the "Das Reich" Division. Little enough seems to known of Kämpfe - apart from the fact that his abduction and subsequent killing by French resistants featured in the sequence of events that led to the Oradour massacre. War is Hell ... JR.

21 tanks "destroyed or disabled" (these were the official regulations for the bestowal). And, yes, I'm sure it takes a lot of guts to take out an enemy tank at relative short range as a single guy.

P.S. these unnatural poses were mostly determined by the photographers to show cuff titles or e.g. tank destruction badges etc. Look here: http://www.ww2incolor.com/german/Viezenz_+G__nther_Hauptmann.html

Thanks, FTG. I was aware of some of that, but not all. Best regards, JR.

He was one of only 98 German soldiers awarded the Knight's Cross AND the Close Combat clasp in gold, Kämpfe was wounded 10 times throughout the war. Posthumously promoted to Obersturmbannführer (Lieutenant Colonel), by the time of his death he was commander of 3rd (armored) battalion/SS-PzGrenRgt 4 "Der Führer".
