This seems like a rather 'beefy' weapon for a 37mm gun. How effective were these against -say- the French tanks of 1940?

The LT35s tanks (after occupation of Czechoslovakia included to the German army as Pzkw-35(tschechische)) were armored with very similar 37mm cannon type 34, which was an elder version of the one in the photo.

This 37mm looks similar to the one on the Panzerkampfwagen 35(t) is armed with.
