Soldiers clear away the rubble left by a strange surprise bombing raid on the city of Kassa (Kosice) located in northern Hungary at the time. One June 26, 1941, three unidentified planes bombed the city and caused dozens of deaths and considerable property damage. The nationality of the attackers remains undetermined, but the USSR was suspected at the time, and Hungary therefore precipitously joined the unfolding German war on the Soviets.

Hungarian fighter pilot ace Dezső Szentgyörgyi (Saint-George) with 30 enemy "kills" to his name reached both on the Eastern front and in wartime Hungary, flying mainly Me-109's. He was fortunate to have never been shot down. Today an air force base is named in his honor.
