On this day in 1944 a Scottish lady, Jane Haining, from Dumfrieshire, became the only Scot to die in the gas chambers of Auschwitz. Her crime, despite being a Christian, she refused to leave the children she taught at a Jewish school in Hungary and stayed with them to the end. The Germans asked her to leave, she refused. She was officially honoured as a Righteous Among the Nations at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem in 2010.
