Certainly Hitler wanted and expected the UK to make peace...and when they didn't, making England realize it had no hope of winning became part of his justification for Barbarossa.

The only exception I can think of, Boxer, is McCain -- he certainly has paid his military dues. Personally, I think (and always have) that Iraq is a war we should never have gotten into. But not that we are in it...I am very concerned that military...

that might have made sense, keep all your bases covered. war has to end sometime, and then everybody has to go back to being neighbors again, maybe good to keep some good blood flowing between them

I sometimes read that Hitler wanted to let the british escape at Dunkirk to create a basis for later peace negotiations with England.
