Why 50 days of hand to hand combat and 40 days of close combat? Is close combat so much more dangerous than hand to hand combat?

Requirement participation in 50 days of hand-to-hand combat,or participation in 40 days of close-combat.In order to receive this 50 days ???? wow.

It's for Close combat.. can't see anyone surviving 50 days of hand-to-hand, that's 50 days fighting up close and personal, in your face with bayonet, knives and shovels. Plus, you would be knackered!!
