Flamme, If English is not your native tongue then I must say your command of the language is complete. My sincere compliments, you are very talented, indeed.

Please allow me to remind you of statement: "likely all" ss-commanders were uneducated thugs. so YOU are generalizing here. My comments are not coming from my own private phantasy, i read a lot and cite in this forum. ww2 and espiacially this dark part of german history is still a sensible issue in concerned countries. be glad you can speak freely about anything in the u.s. sorry, if i don't match your intellectual demands but i am dealing with a language here which is not my native one.

The Gerneral Staff (HEER) were all formally educated men, mostly graduates of German military acadamies. Adolph thought them for the most part worthless. The SS was "his personal army", he made the appointments to senior command, typically political, and on merit of relationship wwith Adolph. I didn't comment on their competance, and I said: "FOR THE MOST PART, THUGS".........that doesn't mean everyone of them! I try to site/quote what I read..........you're completely entitled to your opinion, "flamethrower", I choose to site what's been published. To say I'm no expert is valid, but, my posts reflect what has been written by experts. I believe that an intellectual basis for historical discussion some how escapes you.......been to college/university, "flame"?, if so did you major in athletics? Nothing wrong with not having the opportunity. Still, I believe that I can tell the difference between having an intellectual discussion/disagreement VERSUS dealing with someone who "shoots from the hip"..........basing their argument on their opinion. Sorry! By the way: whats up with the use of alias after your numerous posts...........could it be that you won't stand behind what you state with your name? (I realize that it's a common practice on this site, But, when someone posts/comments as frequently as yourself, you should be willing to stand behind something besides an alias.) Nice chatting w/ you, Mike Rose, M.D. N.VA

By calling competent commanders like Hausser, Steiner, Bittrich, Gille, Keppler, Krüger a.o. "uneducated thugs" you don't show too much expert knowledge either...

The S.S. senior command were mostly (likely all) uneducated THUGs. Sepp D. was a butcher, then Adolph's driver who gets an appointment to General. If any of the S.S. Generals came near a service acadaemy.....it was to sweep, cook, haul trash. Adolph appointed thugs because as a corporal and failed art student, himself, he didn't feel comfortable around the officer corps of the HEER, all educated, many service academy grads.

dear flamethrowerguy: Technically , we're BOTH right: Lehmann and Kramer were BOTH chiefs of the SSLAH divisional staff, at one time. However, what I should have said was " for most of the war": Lehmann was only staff -chief in 1943. Before that he was chief executive officer of the Leibstandarte. Brigadefuehrer Fritz Kramer ( U.S.equivalent major-general) was chief of staff in 44 and 45. I suppose for other viewers we should also mention that Rudolf Lehmann was commander of "Das Reich" for only the last few months of the war, as a Standartenfuehrer ( full Colonel) Before him went ( in chronological order): Paul Hausser until 10-'41, Wilhelm Bittrich until 1-'42, Kleinheisterkamp until Autumn '42, Hausser again until Autumn '43 ( Vahl interim commander for a short while during that timespan), Walter Krueger until spring '44, Heinz Lammerding till 1-'45, and then finally your man Lehmann until the end on 4-'45. As for squeezing Peiper's testicles: I read this too, as a "story": there is no evidence of this to be found whatsoever in the report of the " U.S. Senate inquiry comission on the alleged mistreatment of POW's in Dachau". This report makes an interesting read. This commision, under U.S. senator Raymond Baldwin interviewed 108 witnesses, and came to the final conclusion that Geneva convention rules on treatment of POW's WERE violated at Dachau. So, I'm NOT saying that the Peiper thing couldn't have happened...

Did not know about the bittrich-thing. but i have to contradict concerning dietrich's top staff-officer: this would have been rudolf lehmann, later commander of the "das reich"-division. i could never learn something about dietrich's combined pilot and observer-badge (of course you're right). no objection about that gestapo-scum. i don't know what exactly they did to dietrich but it's a fact that they squeezed peiper's testicles good.
