Hans-Joachim Marseille - The Star of Africa

Hans-Joachim Marseille - The Star of Africa

Description

Hauptmann (Captain) Hans-Joachim \"Jochen\" Marseille (born December 13th 1919 in Berlin, KIA September 30th 1942 near Sidi Abd el Rahman/Egypt. Captain of 3rd Squadron/Jagd-Geschwader 27. 4th holder of the Knight\'s Cross with oakleaves, swords and brilliants. He achieved 158 aerial victories on 388 missions, all victories against western opponents, mostly brits. Marseille was called the virtuoso among fighter aces, it took him just a few shots to shoot down the enemy because he was a sharpshooter, always aiming for the cockpit. On September 1st 1942 he achieved 17 (!!!) confirmed victories, on one day in June 1942 he shot down six opponents in 11 minutes. \"The Star of Africa\" died undefeated on September 30th 1942 when he had to deboard his burning plane and collided with his head against his plane\'s tail unit so that he lost consciousness and was not able to open the parachute anymore. ok well if he went down because of engine failure and was never shot down or forced to crash land it would be fair to say he was never defeated in the air, impressive at the very least.

It all happend during a flight back to the field airport. Marseilles unit didn't encounter enemy forces on that mission but they were flying the G-version of the Bf 109 for the first time when Marseille noticed a trail of smoke and then the engine started bucking which forced him to jump. His last message on the radio was: Got engine failure, got to bail out."

I am not familiar with Marseille but if he was never defeated why was he forced to jump from his burning plane?? Was it anti aircraft fire that got him or another pilot? Sounds like a very good pilot but some of the best were shot down multiple times....

Sounds like a very good pilot but some of the best were shot down multiple times. They lost in combat but survived to fight again so it sounds a little strange to say he was never defeated…
