British POW's Being Marched Out of Anzio

Bundesarchiv 183-J16897

February 1944 - A group of British POW's carry their wounded to a German paratrooper aid station during the bloody Battle of Anzio. Although the scale of the fighting of Anzio was not great, it certainly is listed as one of the war's bloodiest, most ferocious fights. I read in "Day of Battle" (Atkinson) that Anzio quite possibly had the second largest concentration of armored fighting vehicles per hector in WWII during the German counterattack that resulted in nearly unsustainable casualties for both sides--along with great heroism and even some humanity within the Allied and Axis ranks. --Nick
