Field synagogue
Description
Jewish Finnish soldiers infront of their field synagogue at Svir river. Winter War of 1939-40 gave the Jews in Finland a final feeling of being part of the Finnish nation. And during Continuation War even though Finland was fighting side by side with the nazi Germans the Jewish Finns fought as willingly as any other Finns in the war. Over 350 Finnish Jews in total served in Finnish army during WWII, 23 of them were killed in action.

I doubt that they really were aware of how many Jews that fought with the Russians, and Jews where accepted into the Red Army in larger number first after the German invasion of 1941.

Must have been pretty hard for them on a personal level, though. What with thousands of Jews fighting in the Soviet army, these guys must have been well aware that they on one level they were fighting for their country but on another they were fighting ...
