OK boys. This photo has not been taken in Paris nor in June 1940.

This photo (part of a film actually) has been taken in Marseille after the French Armistice. I don't know the exact date. My guess is 1940.

It depicts a ceremony during which French regiments were dismissed and gave up their flags, according to the Armistice's terms.

So it's not Jacques Bonsergent (he was 28 years old when he was shot), it's not in Paris, it's not after the D-Day or in 144, we are in France but in the Free-Zone. The man is not watching German troops or American's.

The women is clapping French soldiers because they fought hard.

And yes, you should reed books about the French campaign which was not a picnic party according to the Germans.

I Googled "weeping Frenchman" and came up with many explainations of this picture. None had to do with 1944. One caption said these people were watching the French battle flags being sent to safety in North Africa from Marseilles in February of 1941....

Another caption said they were watching French troops escaping from Toulon so they could join the Allies. And then of course there is the caption that says these people are watching the German army parade through the streets of Paris. Either of the first two that I mention would make more sense than the Germans in Paris. The man is weeping for the flags or French soldiers and the women is clapping for the same reason. I doubt that any Parisian would be applauding German troops. I also found this picture in a book called "Life Goes To War", it is credited to Movietone News and says that it is about defeated French Regimental flags being sent to Algeria for safe keeping. This is NOT about the Normandy Invasion, these are not happy people!

runnerchick: This photo is almost universally associated with the German occupation of France in 1940, and a few times with the fall of Czechoslovakia in 1938, but I have never seen it tied to the 1944 US landings in Normandy.

unfortunatly the desctiption to this photo is wrong, the Americans had just invaded the beaches of Normandy and were saving the French people from the German rule. That is why the French woman is clapping and the man is weeping.

He's supposed to be jacque Bonsergent, but I doubt it, since he looks to old.
