This picture is provoking. The dead on the picture are obviously stabled there by the Germans, waiting to be buried. But we know Red Army infantry used to attack fixed German positions like this, in packed dense waves of men, machine gunned in large masses. The guys behind had to crawl over their fallen comrades in the front rows.

The German soldier Hans Roth observed in Minsk in 1941 how two young surviving Russians, "mad by fear", ran back to their own lines after a Red Army human wave was stopped, only to be machine gunned by their own commissars. Read it in "Eastern Inferno" at Amazon.


Soviet casualties

Finnish prisoners of wars marching into captivity. They where captured during Soviets Vyborg–Petrozavodsk Offensive June 10 – August 9, 1944.

During Continuation war Soviets got around 3400 Finnish POW and about 1 388 of them died on the camps. Rate of deaths is  probably higher cause Soviets did not  count those ones who died during they march to the camps.
