Again I say bravo to the soldier for deserting and so sad they caught him.

A hanging corpse is more visible and a stronger "deterrent" for potential deserters than a body lying by the wayside. And in some cases, bullets were more precious than rope....

"A pair of GIs cut the wire bonds from the body of a German soldier who had been hanged, along with 10 others, for advocating the surrender of Schweinfurt in central Germany. Many such executions were ordered as object lessons by local commanders, who themselves were threatened with death if their forces failed to fight to the last man." Please remember this human being...

Sometimes is terrible the death set in about 15 minute after the hanging,if the victim hanged up wrong.

Maybe I can help out here imi, as I also have a medical backround. What you are describing is called post mortum lividity. After death, since the blood no longer circulates in the body , it is pulled by gravity and settles in the lowest part of the body to the ground. If the body is lying on it's back, the persons back, buttocks and back of the legs will turn a dark reddish- purple color. Looks like a bad bruise. The process takes some hours to occur and the forensic people can use this to help determine the time of death, so you are correct in this. The massive swelling seen in this poor soul's chest, abdomen and hands is likely from gas formation due to decomposition. He looks to have been hanging there for several days. BTW, the smell is unforgetable, as any battlefield veteran, policeman or medical person can tell you. Hope this helps.

It wasn't just the Gestapo. Ferdinand Schörner, known as "the most brutal of german Field Marshals", was known as for its merciless drumhead court-martials when he was supreme commander of Army Group Center by Janaiary 20th 1945. After an attendance to Schörner and his army group Dr. Joseph Goebbels wrote in his diary: "...as well in the Führers opinion Schörner is one of our most outstanding commanders. I reported the Führer of Schörners radical measures to achieve his aims. Deserters won't get any mercy by him. They got hung on the next tree, attach a board around his neck saying: I am a deserter. 'I refused to defend german women and children. That's why I was hung.' Measures like these actually work. In any case every soldier in Schörners command knows that he might die at the front but he will die in the rear."

This insane attitude came from the top down. Don't forget that in the last days in the bunker, Hitler ordered Speer to flood all the subway tunnels and such where a lot of the civilian population was sheltering. He said that the German population had failed the Third Reich and all deserved to die. Fortunately, and at great risk to his life, Speer refused to carry out the order. The valiant and brave warriors of the Gestapo however continued to shoot and hang anyone they thought was trying to surrender, right up till the very end.
