This is a direct quote taken from Read's Meritorious Service Citation. "While taking his now famous photograph of an enemy bomb exploding on the deck of the carrier USS ENTERPRISE he suffered injuries which cost him his life."

Not to disappoint all, but news has it that the photographer was not killed. Read in new photography book.
And it wasn't heroic, or a dedication...just wrong place at wrong time.

Great picture. Unfortunately, that's exactly the last thing all too many soldiers saw before they died.
