Soldiers hit the beaches

Soldiers hit the beaches

Description

Canadian soldiers hit the beaches and began the deadliest run of their lives. As they worked their way through the obstacles and minefields they came into the killing zones of the German gun positions.

At the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa they show the actual footage of the troops landing on the beach. It is the North Shore Regiment.

Capra's images were all stills, this is the ONLY moving picture images that survived and even some of this was lost due to moisture and poor lab handling.

As far as footage, I recall that there were a whole series of photos that were taken during the first wave at Omaha Beach. Unfortunately, they were lost when the camera became submerged...

FYI... this is the ONLY actual footage of first wave troops hitting the beach on D-Day. This is a still image taken from 16mm moving picture footage filmed from the back of a Canadian Landing craft at Juno Beach. ALL other footage is of 2nd wave troops landing after the beach was taken. In the actual footage there is a scene of one man in front of the camera patting his buddy on the shoulder and wishing him good luck, the second man turns towards the camera and says "good luck to you too Jim" and then they plunge out of the landing craft in the photo above and into their most uncertain future. The footage was shot by a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation camera man on temporty service with the Canadian Army. The photographers name escapes me at the moment but he just passed away a few months ago (2009)
