Description
Canadian soldiers hit the beaches and began the deadliest run of their lives. As they worked their way through the obstacles and minefields they came into the killing zones of the German gun positions.

Capra's images were all stills, this is the ONLY moving picture images that survived and even some of this was lost due to moisture and poor lab handling.

According to Robert Capa who took the first wave pictures Easy Red ,Omaha Beach the darkroom assistant while drying the negatives used too much heat and melted the emulsions. Of the 106 pictures only 8 were salvaged.

As far as footage, I recall that there were a whole series of photos that were taken during the first wave at Omaha Beach. Unfortunately, they were lost when the camera became submerged...

FYI... this is the ONLY actual footage of first wave troops hitting the beach on D-Day. This is a still image taken from 16mm moving picture footage filmed from the back of a Canadian Landing craft at Juno Beach. ALL other footage is of 2nd wave...

At the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa they show the actual footage of the troops landing on the beach. It is the North Shore Regiment.
