The MG 08 remained in Wehrmacht service throughout the war. It was initially issued to second-line units and garrison units (e.g. fortress) and from late 1944 to the Volkssturm. Note also the shoulder slung German Mauser Kar98k rifle. That bipod mounted light machinegun on the right could be a Bren or the Czech ZB 26/30. After the massive losses of all types of weapons in the east beginning in 1943, Germany needed weapons of all types and origins as long as they were serviceable and ammunition was available.
