Private Rudolf S. in Basic Training

Private Rudolf S. in Basic Training

Description

This photo shows my grandfather Rudolf S. as a Private in Basic Training in the spring of 1941. Yes, even Air Force boys had to live through this! Barracks and garrison of his original unit, Flak-Regiment 36, were in the town of Wolfenbüttel/Lower Saxony. My grandfather looks quite worn out on the photo, carrying the carbine 98k on his shoulder like a club. Photo must have been take after a longer march. I guess if he'd known by then that the "snafu" really started for him a couple of months later in Southern Russia, he and his comrades wished themselves back to Basic Training. (flamethrowerguy)

Thank you, LuvHans. Since my grandfather is with the Lord now I am sure he got the message. Unfortunately I got my looks from the other half of the family. (-:

A good friend of mine who is of German descent told me he tried to question his grand-father about what he experienced during WWII (Russian front). But he always refused to talk about it. According to my friend, the problem was his grandpa had something to reproach himself with (SS stuff maybe). He also told me his mother was nearly kidnapped by a Russian soldier while trying to flee East Germany in 1945... Hope your grand-father(s) managed to get through, Flame.

You're welcome, navyson, welcome aboard! See, that's what I tried to accomplish, showing that most of the german soldiers were regular young guys, just like my grandfathers. A misled and misused youth, no murdering animals (of course there were a lot of these too). When I used to asked them how it came they followed the "Führer" that blindly they couldn't give a proper answer. But that's how it was (and still is): the german obeys! Sure they were raised in the system of the Third Reich and didn't know any different. Grandfather once said, afterwards, when it was all over, it was just like a soap-bubble busting and they started to realise: "What the hell have we done?". Anyway, navyson,I look forward for you to join discussions here, check out the forum as well!
