A U.S. Marine at a machine gun position on Edson's Ridge - named after U.S. Marine Corps Lieutenant Colonel Merritt A. Edson, who commanded the unit defending the ridge from attacking Japanese troops. Thereafter it was commonly referred in historical accounts as Edson's Ridge. The battle took place between 12-14 September, 1942; Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, South Pacific.
