Polish cavalry demonstrate a traditional sabre charge, exercise, late-1930s. In practice, it was envisaged that, except in very limited circumstances, would not employ this tactic, but would fight as dragoons - that is to say, on foot, retaining the horse for purposes of mobility. This was, in fact, common practice for cavalry formations from the mid-19th century at least. The advent of the muzzle-loading rifle moved the practice of employing cavalry charges against organized infantry formations from "very difficult" to "totally suicidal" on the negative scale.
