The day before, on March 8, 1945, after heavy fighting, Xanten was taken by Canadian troops. The Canadian military lost, according to their own data, 400 soldiers in the fight against the defending Fallschirmjäger (German paratroops).

Operation Totalize was an offensive launched by the First Canadian Army from 8 to 13 August 1944. The intention was to break through the German defenses south of Caen in Normandy, France and drive on to capture the high ground north of the city of Falaise.
