Consolidated B-24D Liberator: The Consolidated B-24 Liberator was the most numerous American bomber of World War II (over 18,000 were produced). The NACA flew this B-24D at Langley before transferring it to the new NACA Aircraft Engine Research Laboratory in Cleveland, Ohio. The large hanger in the background is the Army Air Forces Lighter-than-Air hanger.

North American XP-51 Mustang: The North American XP-51 Mustang was the first aircraft to incorporate an NACA laminar-flow airfoil. This is the second XP-51, which arrived at Langley in March 1943.

Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress: Although not assigned to Langley this Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress was used by the NACA staff as a test platform during bomb dropping trials. The aerodynamic behavior of a bomb during its descent onto its target was an important consideration during World War II.
