Can anyone identify this?  I don't know if it's from World War I or II. The cylinder is 4 inches (101 mm) long with a diameter of 1 inch (25 mm). Not sure if it's copper or brass in construction. The upper half has 4 double rows of holes totaling 20 holes. On the bottom of the cylinder is an image of a dog, sitting down and in the upper right corner are the letters
 "D R G M". All I know is that it was brought home by either my wife's grandfather (WW I) or her uncle (WWII).   Thank you.

Men of the 29th Infantry Division on their way to the Normandy coast, 6 June 1944

German soldiers and Spanish Guardia Civil gendarme, apparently puzzling over a map.  Does anybody In Here know what is going on in this photo ?  I came across it when looking for something else.  It seems to have to do with an incursion into Spanish territory by a German patrol in the mountainous French-German border region, but I have not managed to find out anything more about it.
