Yes, right, Stefan. Interesting to know that Unteroffizier Walter Pape was born in Siberia, in the town of Irkutsk.

It looks like that the NCO was awarded with the Knights Cross. He has also the Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class. The Ribbon for the 2nd class can be seen above the right corner of his torch, between the two Belts. The Iron cross 1st class is on his left Brest pocket. Also on the left side you can see the Infantry Assault badge below the black belt and above the Pistol holster.

propaganda picture taken on the Russian front, Ukraine, summer '41, during opening stages of Invasion. Unit not identified. Regular Army troopers, all wearing the standard Army breast eagle. N.C.O.(silver braid around collar)in front with newly awarded Knight's Cross ( extreme bravery and leadership). He's already been awarded the Iron Cross 1st class(bravery in combat) and the silver Infantry Assault clasp (at least 3 frontal assaults on 3 different occasions.). Both badges on his ( wearers') left breast pocket. He's wearing the old-type Army ( Heer) uniform with the dark blue-green collar, being gradully faded out of service in '41-'42. Troopers at front left and back right already wearing the new type of jacket with colar in same fabric and color as tunic. Their aluminum belt buckles read " Gott mit uns"(may the lord be with us)around a stylized eagle, wings down. Not also the black(right soldier in back) and brown ( left soldier in back) leather map cases.Scarcely visible is the infantry assault clasp (wearer's left breast) on the corporal ( see shoulder sleave chevrons) in front, left. The brown leather assault harness on the soldier in back left is not regular issue, but probably WW I issue. panzerkeno.
