Funny enough, I was thinking of Professor Porsche as the chief looney in this 'photo. I agree about Hitler's obsession with gigantic "morale weapons", as with the Maus, for example. This is a large subject in itself, but it is clear that Hitler's increasing obsession in the second half of the war with large and/or "speculative" terror weapons was of very dubious advantage to the German war effort. Much labour and treasure were wasted. Even the development of the Tiger (and, certainly, the Tiger II and the "Hunting Tiger") fall under question in this regard. Best regards, JR.

Despite his usual removal from reality, Hitler was often very astute when dealing with machinery. He could see the potential of a good design and often insisted on improvements the designers or army didn't even contemplate. Not that this means that he always fostered good design. MAUS & E100 are examples of misguided efforts that a more reasoned leader would have quashed.
