Combat littering

German and French armour litter the road near the small hamlet of Le Cateau, France, May 17, 1940. The French vehicles include a Panhard P-178 of the 1ème D.L.M. (1re division Légère Mécanique) and Renault B1bis ‘Indochine’ of the 15ème B.C.C. (Bataillon de Chars de Combat), 2ème D.C.R. (2ème Division Cuirassée). ‘Indochine’, together with two other B1bis (‘Savoie’ and ‘Besançon’), was returning from a patrol to Le Cateau when all three were disabled by friendly fire from a French 47 mm anti-tank gun. ‘Indochine’ was hit seven times until the last two shots managed to penetrate the tank, damaging the gearbox and puncturing the oil tank. Luckily, the crew escaped unharmed. PzKpfw 38(t) ‘612’ was, I believe, from Rommel’s 7th Panzer Division. Later that day, Rommel stopped at Le Cateau and took several photos of these same vehicles. I was unable to find out if this is one of his photos. The building still stands today in the background still stands today. Image and text from In Color Veritas/taken from fb
