Battlecruiser "Scharnhorst"
Description
German battlecruiser "Scharnhorst", photo from 1939. During an intended attack on a british Norwegian Sea Convoy on December 26, 1943, Scharnhorst met superior escort forces and was battered down. The ship was hit by more than 2000 grenades and about 50 torpedoes during the battle. Only 36 survivors of the crew of 1840 could be saved, among the dead were the battlegroup commander Konteradmiral Erich Bey and the captain Kapitän z. S. Fritz Hintze. Scharnhorst's derelict was discovered in 2000 by norwegian journalist Alf R. Jacobsen in a depth of about 300 meters (~1000ft.).
