those guys have good reason to smile, just to be able to survive that much action, pilots in that time were so much different.the plane didnt do all the work, so the level of skill involved with that much success had to be incredible

hello john, sorry, but my knowledge about walter krupinski is not that distinctive that i am able to tell something about the mans mother. most likely she was german. All i know is that his mother fled in january 1945 from their east-prussian home of braunsberg (today: braniewo) during the russian advance.

That's right. After he returned from russian war captivity (he was one of the last german soldiers to return home) in 1955 (!) he flew the F-86 Sabre, the F-100 Super Sabre, and the F-104 Starfighter of the new-founded german Air Force which he left prematurely after getting into trouble with his superiors. The reason for the problems were Hartmann's utterings that the new german Air Force hadn't enough experience to handle such a complex plane like the F-104 Starfighter. The plane was commissioned anyway. When deadly accidents accumulated Hartmann drew the consequences and retired.

Those guys were amazing. I understand Hartmann flew the F-86 Sabre in the 1950s?
