Vice-Admiral Sir Lancelot Holland, CB, OR (Greece). Sir Lancelot was Flag Officer in command of British Forces at the Battle of the Denmark Strait. His Flag was carried by the heavy cruiser, HMS Hood. His force met "Germany's best" - the Bismarck - in this battle on 24 May, 1941. Say no more. Nearer my God to Thee, Nearer to Thee ... Rest in the Deep, JR.

In the interests of keeping this thread going, here is a pathetically easy one.

Hmmm. Could be a trick question. That could be either Field Marshal Bernard Law Montgomery or his double - British actor M.E. Clifton James! I'll guess Monty.

    Another fairly simple one....

    Actually, it was his double.

But the thread is moving again, and you have control.

M.E. Clifton James, indeed, who played the part of Monty in order to confuse German Intelligence as to whether the Hero of Alamein was to lead an Allied invasion of southern France, rather than have his part in the Normandy Invasion in 1944. Apparently, he put on bravura performances for German agents in Gibraltar and Algeria, which at least gave rise to a considerable degree of confusion. Was it called "Operation Copperhead"? A certain appropriateness about that, I think ... JR.

Bearing in mind that this is not one of my areas of interest (which means that it is one of the numerous areas in which my ignorance is boundless unlike the Pacific War areas where I profess to be slightly informed), but I seem to recall that James was either badly treated after his impersonation or that he thought he was badly treated.

Don't know about 'Operation Copperhead', but as I type this at my beach shack down at the bottom of the Australian mainland I'm comforted by the fact that most of the snakes around here are copperheads and not a great risk, unless one of the shy bastards bites me. http://www.avru.org/compendium/biogs/A000028b.htm.

    Anyway, back to the thread.

I'm reasonably sure that the thread controller's photo is of someone in a German uniform.
