Default Who can name this ship?

My father took this picture in the early '30s. What is the name of this ship and what navy was it in?

I can't help you, but if that's the wings and floats on a bi-plane behind and just below the rear tower, which looks like it could be a crane tower for the plane (with the same on the other side), it might narrow down the type of ship.

Yes, RS, it is. I think this ship actually carried more than one float plane.

The picture was taken in Batavia around 1933-1935 by my dad, who was then maybe 22 yrs old. It could have been earlier. There is so no date on the back of the photo. I did submit this same photo to a world naval site - can't recall the name - many years ago and they identified it in about 2 days, which I thought was rather amazing. I thanked them profusely.

Another clue is the three guns. The Dutch had no three-gun turrets on their contemporaneous navy vessels.

That is a stern view of an American "New Orleans" class cruiser, most likely USS Astoria, based on that rather large clock face situated just forward of the "C" Turret.

Well, is it the USS Astoria?

    Hello,
I have to agree with my friend!
This is definitely an early "New Orleans" ship.
From the class, only Astoria had the opportunity to be there.

"During the summer of 1934, Astoria conducted lengthy shake"-down cruise in the course of which she voyaged extensively in the Pacific...."

I have a photo from a quite similar position (after 1937) you can compare it.
The layout is similar, nem equipment (radar?) installed, and the large 10-digit clock disappeared.

For me it looks like HMS Argus or "Ditty Box" - escort carrier in British service

I’m impressed! I was always interest in the Argus because my dad was on it for a short time in the 1930's.
