Navy mired in betting-on-sex scandal

July 5, 2009

SEVERAL male sailors have been counselled and sent home after a ledger surfaced recording bets on how many of their fellow crew members they could sleep with.

A Defence spokesperson confirmed last night that an unnamed number of sailors on HMAS Success were returned to Australia from Singapore in May. A formal investigation is under way.

Concerns about the betting book, known as "The Ledger", were raised by female crew members. Dollar values were placed on the female crew, with higher amounts to be won if sailors had sex with a female officer or a lesbian.

Channel Seven news reported last night that the men also challenged each other to have sex in different locations, including on top of a pool table.

The sailors allegedly detailed their bets and the various dollar values on the female targets in The Ledger, which was discovered while HMAS Success was visiting Singapore in May.

Sailors were formally interviewed by their captain, Commander Simon Brown, and a number were immediately returned to Australia.

HMAS Success, an auxiliary oiler replenishment vessel, is on exercises in South-East Asia. It has a company of 220.

Defence said it would be inappropriate to discuss details of the complaints or investigation while the inquiry was under way. But in a statement, the department said the navy warned all its personnel to "treat others fairly" and that "unacceptable" behaviour would be dealt with.

The navy has a strict "equity and diversity" policy that demands workplaces be free of denigrating and harassing behaviour.

The policy is regularly monitored and so-called "health checks" are conducted in workplaces at sea and on land to ensure it is being enforced.

Sailors at the centre of the new allegations were removed from the ship after such a "health check".

The navy has intermittently been involved in headline-grabbing sexual harassment and intimidation complaints, leading to stringent policies to try to force a change in attitude towards female crew.

The latest statistics available reveal that between 2005 and 2007, there were more than 100 official investigations into sexual offences and harassment in the navy.

One of the most sensational cases was a decade ago when the high-profile captain of the frontline frigate HMAS Sydney, Tony Gale, was dismissed for sexual harassment.

The furore surrounding the case led to a wide-reaching investigation by Federal Parliament's powerful foreign affairs and defence standing committee. http://www.theage.com.au/national/navy-mired-in-bettingonsex-scandal-20090704-d8ha.html

Sure, its tacky and degrading, but some responses to it haven't been all that balanced.

I heard a leading feminist interviewed on radio about this latest war crime in the war between the sexes. Her position was that the women were victims of male sexual objectification of women and that the Navy had to prosecute the male sailors to the nth degree because it was against navy regulations to have sex at sea (maybe it's alright in barracks?). After she'd banged that drum senseless, the interviewer asked her whether female sailors who engaged in consensual sex at sea should also be prosecuted.

Response: An indignant "That's a hypothetical question. I don't answer hypothetical questions."

Interviewer: "The whole issue is hypothetical, as there is no evidence any sex ever took place. All your comments are about events that didn't take place, so why won't you answer a hypothetical question about how female sailors who breach the same regulations should be treated?"

Despite a few more gallant attempts to get a response, he got nowhere, leaving the clear impression that the feminist thought that male sailors who breach navy regulations relating to sex, with women at least, should be prosecuted and preferably made to walk the plank while female sailors who consensually do the same thing are victims of men who need to be protected from men because, and here's another shock, all men are bastards.

Hahaha, really? That's pretty hilarious. I don't think of it as real harassment, though, as the female crew didn't really gain any disadvantages or were attacked in any way. It was a douchy thing to do, but as long as all sex (if any occurred, at all) was consensual, there's no real crime done.

And whoever thinks that it's only men who might get 'lonely' on board a ship is an idiot, anyway.

Also, RS*, are you really surprised about that Feminist? There's only two kinds of people who are like that:

1. The paranoid ones, who are completely disconnected and see sexism wherever they go.

2. The egoistic ones, who don't really give a **** about gender equality, but rather use it for their own advantages, be it to advance in politics or advance in their respective careers.

I'd be astonished if she behaved in any way that acknowledged that all men aren't bastards who perpetually oppress and exploit women.

I have no idea who she is or what she does, although those teeth are a clue. That nose looks like it could accommodate, or give, a bit of fun.

She has no idea what she's missing with me.

At my age, if they're not on a walking frame they're a candidate for the stairway to heaven.

Beggars can't be choosers. :D

It's Alice Schwarzer. Look her up.

Her reaction to a guy getting his wang cut off by his crazy-*** girlfriend:

'It was an act of freeing women from the slavery of men. More women should do it.'

I've looked up her, and the view was dark with little prospect of relief. :D

No doubt she'd be happy with a reciprocal campaign of cutting the **** out of sheilas to free men from the tyranny of the snatch.

Then again, slicing the clitoris, labia and sundry other parts of the **** out of women has long been practised in various parts of Africa and the Middle East, which are outstanding bastions of female rights and equality with men.

Oddly enough, these practices when they became known here, in primitive Australia, resulted in legislation to stop such things. This legislation was, believe it or not, fostered by feminists,

Yet at the same time no feminist was concerned and no legislator was game to propose laws prohibiting snipping the foreskin off male infants, as required by Muslims and their enemies the Jews.

I guess that a **** is more valuable than a ****.

Which pretty much fits in with the femo-Nazis who got control of the public pudenda, not least because most of them are lesbians who have no use for a **** (apart from a manufactured strap-on one).

Believe it or not, I actually think she's married.

One can only feel sorry for that poor chap. Unless he's a masochist. Then he hit the jackpot.

Here's another, and more serious, potential shock.

It may be that our military leaders, being a bunch of uniformed bureaucrats terrified of bad publicity and in hock to the femocrats and PC Nazis rather than being warrior chiefs, sacrificed the sailors accused of misbehaviour for no more than public relations reasons.

Time will tell where the truth lies, ably assisted by the destruction of relevant documents and huge memory blanks by everyone involved if it really was a case of sacrificing the sailors to manage public relations issues.

Or maybe the three sailors really were 'a rotten core'.

The Senate Estimates Committee hearing might be interesting. Transcript isn't available yet online.

Sex-claim sailors were 'railroaded'

October 21, 2009

THE navy knew within days that claims crewmen ran a competition on how many female sailors they could sleep with were false, but did nothing to set the record straight, the Federal Opposition claims.

The three men said to have run the competition were removed from supply ship HMAS Success in Singapore in May because of the allegations, and have not been posted back to sea since.

Opposition defence spokesman David Johnson said last night the navy's treatment of the men was ''shoddy'' and their careers may have been irreparably damaged.

Senator Johnson said the claims were fabricated by an aggrieved shipmate of the three sailors.

He plans to pursue senior Defence officers about the navy's handling of the case during today's Senate estimates committee hearings.

Senator Johnson said the three were told they were to be sent home in disgrace and were given 30 minutes to pack their gear and get off the ship.

HMAS Success' commander told the crew a ''rotten core'' had been removed from the ship.

One of the three men had requested leave while the ship was in Singapore and his family was to meet him there, Senator Johnson said.

He was sent ashore to wait for his family with no accommodation arranged for them.

Senator Johnson also said a navy lawyer appointed to represent the men raised concerns about why they were ''landed'' before the allegations were investigated and the navy ignored his requests for information for months.

The legal officer was also called aside by his superiors and told that he worked for the navy command and should not consider the men to be his ''clients''.

The officer was so concerned that he wrote a report to his superiors setting out his concerns about the way the episode was handled, Senator Johnson said.

That officer had since been posted to Western Australia even through his wife worked in NSW, Senator Johnson said.

After the initial media reports in July, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said what was claimed was ''disturbing''.

Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said the claim should be investigated and such behaviour could discourage women from joining the defence force, and the Chief of the Navy, Russ Crane, said the men allegedly involved were removed from their ship pending an investigation.

The claims were widely published around the world.

Senator Johnson said the navy's investigation report was due out soon.

He said it became very clear to ADF investigators from the start that the claim about sailors keeping a ledger on how many female colleagues could be ''bedded'' was blatantly untrue.

Senator Johnson said the navy had over-reacted because of the intense media and political pressure that followed the initial claims run on commercial television.

That had cost the three sailors and their families dearly, he said.

''These men love being in the navy and they love their jobs, and this whole sorry business has illustrated that Defence has a long way to go in the administration of military justice,'' Senator Johnson said.

''This is a railroading of royal proportions.''
