That's pretty much how we did our helicopter coordination training back in '79 -- one guy in a trailer with an ANPRC-77 radio being a "helicopter", a bunch of other guys to push him while going "whocka-whocka-whocka-whocka-whocka-whocka", and us down the other end of the parade ground with another radio and smoke calling him in to the "LZ" :)

As weird it may sound the USAAF used something like that in ww2 for turret trainig, only that was a truck the towing apparatus.

Damn... I cant find a photo in the web but I have a book in wich there is several, the guy was in a turret with a shotgun and was towed by a truck shooting down skeet in the move. That supposedly helped aiming Bf-109 in the B-17 and B-24 turrets, I dont now if that really helped but it was amusing to see for sure.
