Somebody knows more about this machine gun - or is it an rifle rest?

Any trace about the time this foto was made ?

Look more like Royal Navy than Royal Marines to me - the RN frequently sent landing parties ashore at the time this photo would have been taken, even arming them with cutlasses into WW1 (indeed, I can think of at least one incident where cutlasses were used in repelling boarders during WW1).

The photo is pre-WW1, they appear to be armed with the Lee-Metford rifle, which was used before the Lee-Enfield by the Royal Navy

I can't be 100% sure but it doesn't appear to be a MG, but a rifle stand of some kind, with a Lee-Metford rifle fitted to it
