I.e. are you after Mess Tins or Mess Dress? One is a metal container for eating out of, the other is the military equivalent of a dinner jacket!

the mess kits use by soliders in the ones used by US forces in WW2 it was a two part mess kit .

we were still provided with those into the 1980s. Cant recall ever using them. Paper plates and plastic spoons could be bagged and hauled away, The metal kits had to be cleaned throughly to avoid disease, which meant large containers of boiling hot water. A lot of trouble when the companys were scattered far from the cooks. Of course the old C-rations & the newer MREs required neither metal mess kit or paper & platstic.
