What does Operation Dessert Storm, survival pack, air pilot, and Gold have to do in common?

The pilot's survival pack during operation Desert Storm contained gold to bribe the natives with. In the British case, the gold was in the form of genuine gold sovereigns.

Which harkens back to an old British tradition in "Ball Chitty" territories:
as early as 1916 Pilots in such areas were supplied with gold sovereigns (for which they had to sign a form before each flight) in packets of either 4, 6, 8, or 12, depending on the perceived dangers of the mission.
Amazing how sometimes things don't change.
