"Poland, 1958, 104 min. Director: Andrzej Wajda
A landmark in Polish cinema, the most famous and flamboyant work in Wajda’s celebrated war trilogy is also the film that elevated Zbigniew Cybulski, the Polish James Dean, to the status of national icon. Ashes and Diamonds is set, significantly, on May 8, 1945, the first day of the postwar era, and has Cybulski as existential anti-hero Maciek, a young fighter in the nationalist resistance who is ordered to assassinate a local Communist official. While waiting for his victim, Maciek enjoys a night of love with a beautiful barmaid, and begins to question the wisdom of further bloodshed. English sub-titles."
