Die Deutsche Wochenschau was the official german war newsreel from 1940, although the majority of his content is a propagandistical one, is always interesting to see the german armament in some real combat footage.

I start with this from early 1942 wich shows the german guns, artillerie, planes and submarines production pretty nice.

Check the size of this machine tools, I am droling already.

The first part is well know with the old dictator giving away medal to his "antitank" kids, however there is an interview with the very young fighters after that.

There is a good chance of that those kids were actually telling the truth, I mean they did not ( the nazis) gave away Iron Crosses for nothing.

I agree , ideed i don't think the nazi care is it true or not in this period of war.
Certainly those anti-tank kids could to hit some T-34 by price of its life. But if to belive the officials nazi cources thay destroed all Red Army tank two-three times( Like and allies airplains).

Considering the semi-suicidal tactics of those years is plausible that this kids destroyed those tanks an even more, but as you may read the Crosses were not only awarded for tank destroying achievements but for others combat duty also.

It is propagandistic as I wrote in the first post of this topic, however the Wochenschau is well know for its serious combat footages, and that is the interesting part.

Its name is Wochenschau - that means a weekly cast.

Since 23. Oktober 1914 there had been some sort of "Wochenschauen".

The best is download youtube videos as .flv an then convert to the format you like. I already converted several to .vcd format to see it in my DVd, even the quality isnt great.

Analizing the Wochenschau:

There is little doubt than the well staged and edited Wochenschau was during all the war a powerful tool to create and mantain during sometime the myth of the german superiority or invincivility.

Even all the allied and Axis countries used this kind of warfront newsreel the impact of the "Pathe news" made in Britain or the well filmed US army front report or the colour US Navy shows were not as influential in the world public opinion as the Woche.

The work for the german propagandist was a piece of cake during the early victory years of 1939-41 and in some aspects during 1942, because they basicly showed the conquered enemy and the amount of destroyed materiel, there was in fact almost no need to made up things.

However during 1943 with the german retreating in all fronts a change in the perception and focus of all the propaganda is noted, the entering in the war of the US army in the Mediterranean was a major worry for the German High Command. ( Hitler actually wrongly believed that the USA would be so busy dealing with Japan that it would have no resources to engage him in Europe and Africa, of course he was wrong)

With the worsening of the situation you can start to see some glitches in the german propaganda, some of them undoubtly caused for the energy put in demeaning or urderestimate ( to calm german public nerves I suppose) the combat capabilities of this new adversary.

In this the newsreel of january 1943 we can see some of those glitches. (left clik only)

The panorama showed is Tunis, german armored recce unit talking and helping native population, mined roads, defensive emplacements, so far so good , the interesting part come in the comments made in minute 16:25:

"..zerstörte amerikanische Panzer; ein Fallschirmjäger mit einem erbeuteten amerikanischen Haumesser.

wich means "...destroyed american tanks, parachutist with a captured american broad knife"

Well the fact is those are not american tanks, they are destroyed that is true as you can see some holes in the structure but those are british Crusaders mark IIIs with were probably knocked out by PAK. Obviously if the tanks are not from US neither is the "broad knife", the blade is actually 15 inches long (38 cm) "smatchet" ( machete) carried by all english tanks for general purposes.

But heres come the jewel, next the commentator said:

"...Früher trugen es nur die Neger, jetzt auch amerikanische Soldaten."

"..In former times only the negroes, now also American Soldiers carried it"

Knowing the racial preferences and the strong prejudices against the black race in here the german editor is implying that the americans are somekind of inhuman horde wich is armed as the african population.
Obviously if they are armed in this way...well they are inferior, barbaric and uneducated :rolleyes:
