In an attempt to better understand how the Soviets would attempt to fight an armoured war; Im looking into their doctrine and strategies. Does anyone know of any good books on this subject? Anything from just pre-WW2 (1930's etc) to modern.

Thanks for any replies.

See if you can get hold of any books by Victor Suvorov.

He defected to the West in 1978

His book, Inside the Soviet Army, is interesting. I believe he trained as a tank officer before moving to the GRU.

The bits about tank tactics are fairly limited (try a library before you buy) but it is a useful background to Soviet Army thinking in the post war - pre Glasnost era.

Kind regards

Pile as many T-55/62/72s along the IGB as possible, with as many artillery pieces as will fit behind them?

Start your engines, don't forget to stop in Calais.

Thanks Dani & FluffyBunny for your reccommendations. I've bookmarked the sites and am in the process of looking for that book by Viktor Suvorov. I had seen the title before but skipped over it!

Thanks again.

I withdraw my previous advice to get a library copy in light of this Amazon result

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0241108896/qid=1131222744/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_8_1/202-3049254-0856659

At £ 2:50, buy it and hang the expense!

"The Tigers Are Burning" by Martin Caiden. Very good book about Kursk but also gives an excellent analysis of Soviet and German tactics at the time.
