Hi everyone,
post your favourite Soviet War Picture with a description of it and if possible a source where you got it from.

BTW, the Russian soldiers allowed to "spontaneously" meet the Americans were hand-picked and heavily vetted by the NKVD for reliability before the meet-up happened.

Commando Jordovski

Really why was that ?
They would of met side by side in battle closing in on Berlin though right?

Really why was that ?
They would of met side by side in battle closing in on Berlin though right?

Because the NKVD did not want people who would either run away, give secrets to the US, or bring back stories about how good American equipment was (this could get you sent to GULAG after the war under Section 58 ).

The meeting was arranged on the Elbe in the full view of the world's press and was precisely stage-managed. There was an unofficial meeting when some Americans crossed the Elba earlier and ended up fighting against the Russians (who opened fire on them) for a few days. This was, of course, covered up at the time. The story of this was recounted on a history programme on Discovery, but I think it's also in Hastings's Armageddon.

The Soviet Union and U.S.A were very fragile allies, i knew there was an incident involving some Russians and Americans to open fire on each other.
By the way when you post back Man of Stoat, add a photo mate :D :D 8)

I got the picture from a Russian website. The uniform and equipment looks correct for the period. But in all probablity the photo is staged. I could well be from a 1950s Russian film, honeslty who knows for sure?

You have to consider if are they posing for a movie-photo or is it real WW2 photograph which is really hard in this case, and these soldiers look like they are either going for battle/advancing or retreating and because its the Russians in either way i wouldnt have a smile on my face like that Soviet soldier on the left with the Radio does lol .

CJ i've seen plenty of photos taken during WWII of smiling Russian soldiers. Also he's carrying a ammo can not a radio.

Most photos both on the German and Russian side were taken for propoganda and posed. It was not uncommon for a photographer to grab a unit and get them to go through various mock senerios for a photo shoot.

This is also the reason why you rarely find pictures of Russian soldiers using camouflage, even though the Red Army were specialists in using camouflage and inflitration techniques. Red army manuals go into great depth about how to camouflage soldiers and equipment.
The Russian soldiers wanted to look garrison smart and neat in the pictures, having grass or other botanical camouflage material attached to the uniform was considered purely field expedient and definitely not smart. Back then it was before the Rambo look became fashionable. A smart soldier had polished boots and a clean shaven streamlined look.

Nice pictures Clauss did you scan them or find them on internet because they are fantastic, very nice work !!!

That picture you suggest should be put as an avatar is an excellent idea :D , seeing as its also in Colour and shows a young Russian Soldier in his uniform for his country.
Alot of people have black and white avatars even though this site is WW2 in color, colour picture are more appealing to me :) , i still like B & W though  .

Why dont you send that colourful young Russian soldier picture to Erwin and ask him to reduce the size to a facial close up, maybe he could put some russian red stars on the pic. to ?? , Erwins good at doing that stuff

My favourite Russian WW2-era pic - KV-2 52ton heavy tank fitted with commanders cupola from a PanzerKampfwagen III (or IV?) medium tank. Its a German "conversion" for the small number of KV-2 that they employed as special heavy gun tank units.[/img]

An off topic interesting aside, the KV-2 really had to face the target when firing, there were numerous occassions when they traversed the turret, especially on uneven ground, fired, and then fell over. A great pic of an amazing tank!

I've never seen this tank before - surely the ugliest thing ever put on a battlefield??? Now there's a challenge - can anyone think of anything uglier that went in to battle?

Firefly - that is so funny about it falling over if firing broadside on uneven ground. I can imagine the Germans having a good laugh at that and the crew members filling the air with a few choice words.

Firefly

Big beast for 1940 though, saw its debut in the Finnish war where it was used to bust bunkers.

Gavin-Phillips
10-27-2005, 04:19 PM
Whats uglier than a KV-2? Easy really, any of the Japanese or Italian tanks produced at around the same time! At the time of production, the KV-tanks were the most powerful in the world, comprising superior mobility, firepower and protection than anything else around.

Not without its flaws though.

As for the KV-2, never saw service in the Russian-Finland winter war, arrived in service too late. A couple fired on already captured ex-Finnish bunkers but thats about it.

Want something uglier? Try the German A7V :?

Yep - compared with the A7V the KV-2 is a real beaut. I love the perpendicular (to the ground) turret armour. Must have made a lovely bang when a shell hit that.

Perhaps one of the best sources on the KV would be Zaloga's New Vanguard KV-1 & 2 heavy tanks 1939-1943

or

AFV Profile No17 Russian KV & JS

AFK Profile books were printed around 1974/75 and so are long out of print but you can easily find them on eBay, though the rare ones are more expensive of course!

Yep - compared with the A7V the KV-2 is a real beaut. I love the perpendicular (to the ground) turret armour. Must have made a lovely bang when a shell hit that.

 :P Indeed I have to agree. Truthfully, not many were built (cant remember just how many), as with many WW1 era tanks, they had alot of reliability issues and the A7V in particular was rushed into production anyway so there wasnt much time for them to crawl around any kind of proving ground.

I'm starting to wonder if they ever saw action at all!

Using someones shoulder to fire a DP at a straffing aircraft....interesting idea that is

The picture is posed. I'd be very surprised that they actually considered shooting a DP like that. The charging handle runs underneath the action and the cases will be ejected on to the assistants back. Also the gas port opens just by his face which would make the whole experience rather unpleasent.

Finally shooting a slow ROF gun like the DP, at aircraft is just a waste of ammo, even MG34's and 42's were useless agaist straifing aircraft unless in a dual mount.

Gutkowski fantastic pictures, lots I haven't seen before, I would love to see more so if you need some webspace to upload them to PM me and I'll give you a ftp access to my site.

I have also some soviet photos which I realy love because they depict the very nature of soviet regime.
Not all of the are exactly from the period of WWI but because Trotsky was murdered in 1942 I think that they are quite relevant.

http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/3023/jezow10qf.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Defense Commissar Kliment Voroshilov and Premier Vyacheslav Molotov (on the left) stroll along the Moscow-Volga canal with Comrade Stalin and NKVD boss Nikolai Yezhov, (very nasty bugger), who was arrested and executed in 1939.

http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/6000/nojezow3da.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here brilliant soviet science proved that comrad Yeshov never existed :D

This was of course quite common practice... Amazing, 50 years before Photoshop! :D

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/1894/trotskyorig18xa.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Here we can see comrade Trotsky...

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/6969/trotskyalt14dz.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
And suddenly comrade Trotsky vanished in thin air...

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/7205/trotskyorig25hr.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
And again Trotsky is next to arch murderer Lenin...

http://img92.imageshack.us/img92/5288/trotskyalt26lb.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
And lovely comrade Lenin without comrade Trotsky...
Perhaps Trotsky went to the toilet?

http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/8546/yenukidze4nc.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Next to comrade Molotov you can see clearly comrade Yenukidze.
Do you really see him?

http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/9380/nojenukidze1sv.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
And comrade Yenukidze disappeared after his execution...
Quite right, if he was shot, he should not seat next to comrade Molotov. :D

Soviets were so precise in alteration of reality, past present and future, that pages with altered photos in Great Soviet Encyclopedia were printed and send to all subscribers with instruction: " Cut page such and such with razor blade and paste new one attached".

I hope that you may now think longer about authenticity of any soviet photo.

Cheers,

The period of that photos is 1918-1935 when bloody bolsheviks leaders killed each other. It's out of WW2 and out of topic.
The Troysky (Leiba Bernshtain) was killed 21 aug 1940 in Mexica. His personal guilt was extermination of millions civils peoples and russian officers. He was creator and leader (with Yakov Sverdlov and Lenin) of "Big Red Terror" in 1918-1922.
I hope that you may now think longer about authenticity of any soviet photo.
Not any soviet phonos, just wild period of bolshevism up to WW2.

My greeting, Lancer. :D
The Lejba Bernstein was turn out of Communists party in 1927, and in 1929 he leaved USSR. Since that time his photos begin "vanished in thin air" from any soviet official documents.
N.Yezhov was shoted down 4 april 1940, and his portrayal "disappeared" afthe that. Therefore, the period of you interesting photos ,of course, include WW2.

Uncle Joe continued killing innocent people right to his death in 1953.
Well, "Uncle Joe" Stalin was the product of bloody bolshevism, but i think, he never was bolshevic. He was monarch. He used against bolshevics their
own method - the terror.
Who was the "innocent people" , Lancer? May be the Trotsky or Yezhov was "innocent"? The great myth the history of stalinism is to blame personally the Stalin for victims of "big terror". The terror begin without Stalin in 1918 peoples like Trotsky.
I think the "great polish" in 1937-39 was necessary to remove murderers lake the "first revolutioners". They, practacally all, were the extremists and bandits. And Stalin sended they all to devil.

Hi Chevan, greetings, :D
How's things in sunny Krasnodar? :)

You have a point,
I don't always agree with Rezun/Suvorov, but I agree with him that Red Army would be worst off without great purge of 1937.
Stalin certainly eliminated murderers and pretty useless but costly figures in the army.
Elimination of Tukhachevsky was not that bad too, he had many quite unrealistic ideas which could cripple economy.

By innocent people I meant thousands which were needed for industrialisation - slave labour - and perished in Gulag.
Stalin created system which was killing by default.
I know it first hand from my father. He was in the Polish Army in September 1939. When Red Army invaded eastern part of Poland he changed into civilian clothing and tried to go home crossing river San.
Of course he was going to German zone. NKVD border guards caught him.
He received interesting sentence:
1. Illegal crossing of the border of USSR - 4 years... (doesn't matter that river San is nearly in the middle of todays Poland...)
2. 3 years for being a spy - quite logic - only spy could attempt to cross the border. :D
3. 3 years for counter-revolutionary activity - quite logic as well - spy must be counter-revolutioner... :D
All together 10 years. He was sent to the camp near river Ussa, the whole transport - (mixed batch - Poles, Russians, Ukrainians) - about 1450 men. After winter only 320 remained alive.
After signing of "dogovor" Sikorski-Stalin, my father joined gen.Anders Army and was evacuated to Iran.
He told me a lot about USSR and people he met there.

Cheers,

Hi, Lanser .
It's realy sad story take place with you father. But i hope it happy-end story, because you appeared
How old are you? 62?
Yes of couse, many simple peoples perished , particularly died of starvation , while bolshevics bited each other coming to power.
But not Stalin created the system of "working class" terror. It was the work of peoples like Trotsky, Lenin and ets. Simply Stalin turned out to be a most "talent". Stalin was most pragmatic and practical men in comparison with other leaders.
I think our theme out of topic.
