sorry i make an off-topic opinion, i watched stalingrad, its a pretty good movie except at the end, it has a really strange ending, it didnt really say much in terms of plot

watched downfall, as they call it here, thought it was of exceptional quality, rather a accurate portrayal of the fall of third reich. Having recently written an essay on the fall of Berlin for my degree found the film most interesting. Though, it did make one feel rather good to know what a bunch decrepped retards to Nazis really were. :lol: :lol:

I can get it on DVD here - the problem is that it'd be spoken German (my 4th language) with Dutch subtitles (my 3rd language). This gets complicated, and confuses both languages (they happen to be rather similar - I'm sure Frionscam will now pipe up about how German is a Nordic language and Dutch is a romance language cos the Netherlands were part of the Spanish empire or some other BS to claim that they're not similar at all ;))

Just rented this film, in German with Dutch subtitles, so I understood about 75-80% of the dialogue.

I must say that this is one of the best and most moving films of recent years - the portrayal of Hitler is excellent; the portrayal of Eva Braun was disturbing. The counterpoint between the manic depressive, delusional, mad Hitler, and the manically happy (if such a thing is possible), equally delusional Braun was fantastic.

There are many extremely disturbing points in the film, which moved me such that having seen it once, I could not sit through it again.

First of all is the German girl who volunteers to man the 88. She is the product of having grown up completely under Naziism, and has completely absorbed the propaganda. The point when she has her suicide pact with the Hitler Jugend leader was moving, exceptionally disturbing, and it affected me greatly.

Next, the whole parts dealing with the Goebells children was also extremely moving - first of all, when the secretary is feeding them & hitler shoots himself, one of the boys shouts "Volltreffer!" (Direct hit), indicating that they really don't have a clue as to what's going on. When Mrs Goebells and the "doctor" are administering the sedative, "So that you don't get ill from the dampness in this old bunker", the little girl says "but it's not damp in the bunker". At this point, one of the older girls realises that something is up and refuses, so Mrs Goebells & the SS chap force her to drink it. This was particularly disturbing. And then the sequence when Mrs Goebells goes around administering the poison......

As the world of Berlin disintigrates around them, some of the die-hard Nazis are still enforcing order and discipline, executing civilians ("And who's going to stop me?"), hanging them from lamp-posts with signs around their necks, right up to the last minute. And then when the report that the surrender has been signed, some of the SS officers shoot themselves immediately in the head.

I can see why this film caused a stir in Germany - portraying Hitler as a real person with real feelings was a bit of a first, and the fanaticism of the SS and the Hitler Jugend is probably something they'd rather learn from and then forget.

This is a slightly disjointed post, but I cannot overstate how much Der Untergang has affected me.

Just watched this one. I thought it was pretty good. However they only had norwegian danish finnish and swedish subtitles so that was a bitch. So i had to get a "not so keen" German to watch it with me. She thought it was a pretty good movie as well but I think she would just rather assume that all Germans were on vacation between 1939-1945. :D

K finally saw the movie with English subtitles which makes a big difference. Coz my german is much crappier than i had ever imagine. The only reason I half way knew what was going on last time was coz I knew the history. Anyhow Good Movie. I give it an 8/10.

I thought the movie was interesting.

I remember watching the special features on the DVD after watching the movie and noted that the German actress who played Magda Goebbels explained how difficult it was for her emotionally preparing for her role - that Magda Goebbels could bring herself to poison all of her children was particularly troubling to her.

As the Red Army rampages through Berlin, Hitler and his staff have retreated to the bunker under the Reich Chancellery. They are all here-Himmler, Goebbels, Speer, the entire fascinating, loathsome crew of commanders, mad visionaries, and toadies (all brilliantly acted)-and, leading them still, a man so physically ill and constricted in movement that he looks like a broken-down puppet from a Bavarian travelling circus. The puppet comes to life, of course, in appalling self-pitying rants that are borderline funny. The entire movie teeters on the edge of sick comedy-in particular such scenes as the death of the Goebbels children, one by one, at the hands of their mother-and at times one longs for a coldly malicious ironist like Brecht or Fassbinder to come in and take over. I personally liked "Der Untergang".
It is funny thing that I could not borrow it in Australia. Also I couldn't find DVD

I was under the impression......due to what ive read and heard......that the majority of the movie was pretty accurate. Sure there is a bit of "Hollywood" in every movie. It looked pretty dead on to me. Of course I wasnt there.

The movie is pretty good as for sticking to the facts, I believe the scene when Jung and the HJ boy ride their bicycle in the end is fictional, also the film play down Jung "Naziness".

This is a very good WWII movie that will become a classic.

For those who understand German it's great to watch the movie in German without subtitles.

Very good acting of "Bruno Ganz" portraying Hitler.
