Raeder was sentenced to life imprisonment for waging a war of aggression, a charge arising from his planning of the German invasion of Norway. The sentence was highly criticized and later reduced.

Großadmiral Dr. phil. h.c. Erich Raeder (1876-1960) in an early most probably pre-war picture. "Pre-war" because on this picture Raeder is not awarded with the Knight's Cross yet. He got it on September 30th 1939. Supreme commander of the Reichs- respectively Kriegsmarine (Navy) from 1928-1943. After Hitler blamed the Kriegsmarine of cowardice in late 1942 Raeder felt dishonored and retired. On the Nürnberg-Trials Raeder was convicted to life imprisonment due to "war-crimes", "crimes against peace" and "collective conspiracy". He begged the Allied Control Council for execution by firing squad instead but this wish was denied. Kept in the war criminal-prison of Landsberg/Bavaria in 1955 at the age of 79 Raeder was released due to health reasons. On his funeral in 1960 his successor Großadmiral Karl Dönitz held the funeral eulogy.
