Ahh, the "desert fox"! The only WWII German general (field-marshall, if you will) to have a military training facility and a destroyer named after him, in the modern German "Bundeswehr". The $ 1,000,000 question still remains: did he, or did he not know about the conspiracy against Hitler?

who knows? by the way, here in germany even streets are named after rommel. normally unthinkable with former wehrmacht soldiers... p.s. it's a damn shame you sized some of the pictures down. they were fantastic backgrounds...

He knew enough to get him killed!

  • Posted by panzerkeno on Thu 24 Jan 2008 12:41:41 PM EST

Not really: there is no substantial historical evidence that he actually knew of the conspiracy, let alone the actual bombing plot. What comes closest to proving that he DID know, is Lt.Col. Caesar von Hofacker's testimony that he ( Hofacker)had been assigned the task ( by the conspirators) to "win over" Rommel to the plot. This testimony was given under Gestapo interrogation, so like any testimony under torture it swings both ways:either you're telling the truth because you want to stop the torture, or you're just making things up and telling what the interrogators want to hear-as long as they stop the torture...

IF ROMMEL HAD FULL CONTROL OF THE GERMAN ARMIES IN FRANCE. THE WAR WOULD HAVE TURNED OUT DEFERENTLY.

  • Posted by panzerkeno on Sun 27 Jan 2008 09:05:30 AM EST

not really-it would only have lasted a little longer:1) Not one German commander could do anything about the devastating allied naval artillery.2) Luftwaffe had never planned for a strategic bomber, they had neglected fighter build-up:all fighters available were defending German airspace; the new jet fighters were too little and too late.3)Sowjet forces were closing in, as such the Caucasian oil fields were lost-hence the dire felt fuel shortage in Normandy.4) Available troops in Normandy were totally inadequate given the overall tactical situation.5) supply and communication systems were breaking down by the minute. 6) elite units, if available, were almost all already decimated in strength before the actual fighting inland. Etc. etc. Sorry, but no: this was the enevitable end, and the bright ones like Von Rundstedt and Rommel knew it.

I think Rommel was the most honourfull General in the whole WW2!! He even sent some Trucks with Water to Montgommery´s Troops in northern Africa... Im sure we was a good man with a big Heart(as big at it can be in a War like this)

THE MOST HONOURABLE GENERAL INTHE GERMAN ARMY DURING WORLD WAR II

  • Posted by me on Sat 12 Apr 2008 09:32:09 PM EDT

In all fairness Hitler had several hundred generals. Rommel wasn't the best. He came in around 10th place. The best was Mainstein and the other were all on the eastern front that we know little about.

On the eastern front they had battles SO big they made D-Day look like a training excercise. This is where the best generals were. Rommel wasn't there, he fought the allies and we made him bigger than he actually was. He was good but wasn't the best.

He was truly a great man, Germany's Last Knight. R.I.P Erwin Rommel. =)

Rommel was a brilliant General who fought the western allies from German advance on Dunkirk to Normandy invasion. Given the fact he faced a foe who was numerically supperior in men and resources, he did exremely well to contain them as long as he did.

This is one of the people that make me proud to be part german. Aside from being a brilliant strategist and teacher, he was a devoted family man and patriot. He did not deserve to suffer his fate, as he was heroic in his acts as his words.men like rober e lee, nathan forrest, thomas jackson, rommel is right up there as far honorable warriors are concerned

Would have been awesome to have him on our side. Sucks that such a brilliant leader had to take orders from someone like hitler.
